At this point in the process of Haydn Chronology, for many works it is not possible to be more precise than a decade, or a half-decade at best. During the early parts of his career, he was extraordinarily heedless when it came to his legacy, two centuries down the road!
Fortunately, some very astute people have been working on this issue for the last seventy-five years or so, and we are in a much better position than our predecessors were, when the best they could get was "composed before 1766". And while it may seem like painting with too broad a stroke, perhaps, I am going to begin this series of references on "Music by Decade" with the music of the 1750's, and even though we are quite sure of a few pieces, I will merely list them by genre and identification number. Like the dating itself, the decade is a trifle wide, beginning with the masses, believed composed in 1749 before Haydn left Stephansdom, and continuing to the end of 1760, when he left the Morzin household and was just a month or two away from officially working for the Esterházy's.
On the question of what to omit and what to include, I suspect the Haydn Institute itself would do no more than I do, which is to use my best judgement. I have tried to insert some tiny notes on some items in hopes they will clear things up a bit without a major explanation.
In future decades, when things become more certain, I will begin to put in a column containing the actual year of composition. For this decade, though, I fear doing that would smack of hubris!
