The symphonies of this era mark a stylistic turning point for Haydn. Not as though he completely abandoned his old style, but more as though he had continued his lifelong habit of exploring new idea paths. Among these we find a higher proportion of minor key works, a lessening of galant style and various other hallmarks which have served in the past to help identify works of this period (not only symphonies). I would point out that the names appended to these works have little or nothing to do with Haydn, except for Tempora Mutantur which he inscribed on the autograph.
