In keeping with the mission with which I began this journey, this week's 'essay' consists of little more than a list. It is, however, the sort of list which you won't find around every corner. There are very few arbitrary choices of dates in this decade, which already makes it an improvement over previous ones!
Throughout his career, Haydn was very flexible in his compositions; he composed in every genre of the time. Twenty-five symphonies, some in different versions, a dozen string quartets, a final book of thirty baryton trios, an oratorio, six Italian operas, twenty keyboard sonatas, two masses… and this is only what we know about which has survived the Great Fire of 1779!
Next time, we will move ahead to 1789, we are now on the verge of looking at the end of an era in Haydn's life, and things are getting interesting.
Thanks for reading!
